Gautier Capuçon, Renaud Capuçon – 2003

The brothers Renaud and Gautier Capuçon take the stage alone in five duets for violin and cello. Kodály’s large-scale Duo, with its echoes of Hungarian folk music, dates from 1914; Schulhoff’s Duo, from 1925, is a lesser-known masterpiece of great intensity. Norwegian Johan Halvorsen’s Passacaglia performs a set of dazzling variations on a theme from Handel’s Harpsichord Suite in G minor, No.7, while the variations on ‘God save the King’ were written (and first performed) by the great Belgian cellist Adrien François Servais and the violinist Joseph Ghys. Eric Tanguy’s playful Sonata for violin and cello was composed for Renaud and Gautier in 2002 and first heard at the Chambéry festival; it here receives its recording première.
